It seems the fall and winter are the best times to make a family favorite of Cinnamon Buns. The warm oven is bursting with the fragrance of cinnamon and yeast-dough. These treats are loaded with cinnamon and butter and are frosted with a perfect-sweetness cream cheese frosting. I make my own brown sugar, (Homemade Brown Sugar) which adds to the extra-delicious-made-from-scratch-flavor. This recipe is easy, but a little time consuming, but well worth it.
One 1/4 ounce package of dry yeast
1 cup warm milk
Dissolve yeast in the warm milk in a large bowl. Wait until bubbly.
Ingredients for Dough:
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter or margarine melted
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour
Add the Dough ingredients to the yeast mixture in the large bowl. Mix well by hand.
Knead the dough on a floured surface into a large ball.
Cover and rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Roll the dough to approximately 20″-23″ x 15 – 17″ inches in size and 1/4″ thick
Ingredients for Filling:
1/3 cup butter or margarine softened
1 cup packed brown sugar Homemade Brown Sugar
2-1/2 Tablespoons cinnamon
Spread the softened 1/3 cup margarine over the dough, all the way to the edges.
Combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the butter on the prepared dough.
Start rolling the dough from the long (20″) side and roll the dough down to the bottom edge.
Cut into 2″ slices. Put 6 in a greased 8″ baking pan.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Ice with below frosting.
Cream Cheese Icing:
1 stick softened butter
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup (2 ounces) cream cheese
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients until smooth. Frost or strizzle the slightly cooled cinnamon buns with the icing.
